In fall quarter 2006, the SCS began offering a new class: Statistics 893C/693C. Stat 893C/693C is not a statistics class in the traditional sense; there are no lectures, homework, or exams. However, enrolling in Stat 893C/693C allows you to have access to a graduate student consultant during the quarter in which you are enrolled. This page addresses some of the most common questions about 893C/693C. If you need additional information, feel free to contact the SCS Operations Manager, Jeni Squiric, at 292-1529.

What are the required texts/materials?

This course does not require any texts or materials.

How will I be graded in this course?

Stat 893C/693C is graded as a pass/fail course. Simply interacting with your consultant and making an effort to progress in your research will earn you a passing grade. If you do not meet with your consultant or make an effort to effectively use 893C as a resource, you will receive a failing grade.

How much working time can I expect from my consultant?

SCS consultants can contribute, at most, 15 hours to your project over the quarter. It is up to you and your consultant to determine the best way to allocate those hours. For example, you may choose to meet with your consultant 1.5 hours per week for each of the 10 weeks of the quarter. If this is what you choose, the consultant will have no time to perform research for your project outside of your meetings. Alternatively, you could choose to meet 1 hour per week and the consultant could work on your project an additional half-hour each week on his or her own. You are expected to assist the consultant by doing approximately 20 additional hours of work over the quarter.

I'm not available until several weeks after the quarter has started. Can I still get 15 hours of consulting?

Unfortunately, you cannot expect your consultant to provide the full 15 hours of consulting if you do not start working together until the quarter is partially over. SCS consultants must allocate their time among several clients simultaneously, and they typically cannot devote all of their time to just a few clients during a week.

What happens if I don't finish my project this quarter and need more help?

You can enroll in 893C/693C for up to five quarters. However, it is strongly encouraged that you make as much progress as possible during the quarter in which you are enrolled. The consultants employed by the SCS frequently change between quarters, so you may need to start working with a new consultant if your project lasts longer than one quarter. If you believe you will need to enroll next quarter, please make sure to do this as soon as possible because the class fills up very quickly.

What work is the consultant allowed to do?

The amount of work the consultant is allowed to do for you may be limited by your advisor. Be sure to check with your advisor whether he or she expects you to conduct all statistical analyses yourself. Regardless of the arrangement you decide upon, the consultant should never write text that will appear directly in your thesis.

Can I request a specific consultant?

The SCS assigns consultants to projects based on what we consider to be the most efficient for completing the project. In rare cases, we will reassign a project or allow a client to request a specific consultant.
