Dear clients, Since our restructuring in October 2003, the SCS has provided professional statistical consulting support to OSU faculty and their students in the areas of design of experiments, survey analysis, statistical modeling, data analysis, and database development. Under the guidance of Dr. Thomas Bishop, the Director of the SCS, and Dr. Chris Holloman, the Associate Director of the SCS, we have provided all university researchers with direct and easy access to Ph.D. and Master's level statistical consultants. The SCS staff members have been fortunate to work on a variety of exciting research projects with faculty and students across the university. Over the past three years the SCS has completed over 365 projects. These projects have led to publications in respected scientific journals and have provided a rich exposure to applications for the graduate students in the Department of Statistics. Unfortunately the college of MAPS and the Department of Statistics cannot continue to bear the complete burden of funding these consulting activities. It has always been our position that it is not reasonable to expect individual faculty members or students to personally fund statistical consulting services. The SCS, however, has been unable to obtain direct support from the colleges and departments accessing our services. Therefore, effective the beginning of Autumn Quarter 2006, the SCS will no longer be able to provide free consulting services to OSU faculty or students. We will complete any current, active projects during the autumn quarter, but we will not be accepting any new, unfunded work. We have created a new funding mechanism for graduate students working on their Master's theses or Ph.D. dissertations that will allow them to continue receiving help from the SCS by enrolling in a special statistics course. For the Autumn Quarter, this course is being offered as STAT 893C (STAT 693 for undergratudates working on theses), and students can begin enrolling immediately. STAT 893C/693 is a four-hour research course that will provide graduate students with access to SCS consultants and academic credit for the time they spend working with SCS consultants. Their enrollment in this course will also provide funds to support the SCS consultants working with them on their research projects. Effective autumn quarter, SCS consultants will only be able to provide consulting support on research projects if the students they are working with are enrolled in Stat 893C/693, or if they are directly funded on grants or by departments through the 100W process. The College of MAPS, the Department of Statistics, and the SCS regret that this action has to be taken, and we will pursue every available option to obtain fair and equitable central university funding that would enable us to continue providing our services to individual faculty members and their graduate students. Sincerely, Dr. Thomas A. Bishop Past Director, Statistical Consulting Service |
